In 1954 Barney & Eleanore Szozda purchased a business in downtown Weyerhaeuser, Wisconsin from her father, John Kawa. They added on to the building and created a living space and Barney's Grocery began.
Barney passed away suddenly in 1967 leaving behind Eleanore and their three children. The two boys and their mother continued to run the grocery store. The oldest son Don, (16 years old at the time) became head of the meat department.
In 1981 Don and his wife Virginia purchased the store from his mother. In 1995 Don remodeled the facility to accommodate sausage making so along with a full service meat department, custom processing and wild game processing they were now making sausage. Barney's Meats was on a roll!
Barney's Meats now has 8 employees and a full line of homemade Summer Sausage, Polish Sausage, Bratwurst, Hot Dogs & Snack Sticks. We also smoke and cure our own hams and bacon. Don still has a full line of groceries but his main focus is making sure each and every customer gets the highest quailty meats available.
